Make a Mini Greenhouse
Note: While new leaves will grow, this won’t produce a full carrot in the soil—but it is a fun way to watch plant growth in action and engage students in discussion.
What you’ll need for each student, pair or small group:
- 1 clear plastic bottle
- 1 carrot top (cut 2 inches from the end)
- Potting soil
- Scissors or knife (adult use only)
- Tape
Instructions
- To prepare the bottle, cut it horizontally about three-quarters down from the top, creating a base and a removable top section.
- Fill the bottom section with soil nearly to the top.
- Press a carrot top cut-side down into the soil so it sits firmly.
- Create the mini-greenhouse by reattaching the top part of the bottle. Secure it with tape around the edges and place it in a bright, sunny location and keep the soil damp.
Use some discussion questions to engage students such as:
- What do plants need to grow healthy and strong?
- Do you notice anything different about the carrot top today?
- What’s growing from the carrot?
- What does your plant need to keep growing? (Light, water, warmth).
- How do you think the leaves will look tomorrow?
