Farm to School Institute

Farm to School is a comprehensive strategy with a goal of helping students establish lifelong positive relationships with food while supporting a more just food system. The strategies used to achieve this shift include: serving healthy local food in schools and early education programs, improving student nutrition, providing hands-on food systems learning opportunities, and developing meaningful relationships between community partners, schools and students. Farm to school supports youth in connecting the dots of where their food comes from and how their food choices impact their bodies, the environment, and their communities at large.

The Massachusetts Farm to School Institute is a year-long professional learning opportunity for a select number of early education programs and school/district teams from across Massachusetts.

The application deadline for the 2024-25 School Year has been extended until Friday, May 3rd. Please read on for more information on how to apply.

Please watch the below video for a brief overview of the Mass. Farm to School Institute.

Application Details

  • Application Deadline: Extended until Friday, May 3rd.
  • All Teams: First assemble an early education program or school-based or school district-wide team. Early education and school based teams should have 4-6 members  and school districts should have 5-7 members. Teams should be comprised of a diversity of individuals representing all aspects of the school, including, but not limited to:
    • School nutrition personnel — food service directors, school chefs, kitchen managers
    • Classroom teachers
    • School administrators or curriculum coordinators
    • School nurses
    • Parents, school board, or community members
    • One district-level administrator *(for district-wide teams only)
  • For School District Teams: In your application, please identify one or two schools in your district in which you will focus efforts on implementing a Farm to School action plan that can serve as an example for other schools within the district. We have found this to be the most successful way to guide district teams through the planning process.
