School Garden 101 Series: Best Practices for Food Safety in School Gardens

The Massachusetts Farm to School Network’s Education Working Group presents Farm to School Basics: A Webinar Series for Garden Educators in Mass., a five-part webinar series taking place throughout the spring. (Part 4/5)

Presenter: Dawn Lovejoy (Nutrition Educator, UMass Extension)

School gardens are a wonderful teaching tool for nutrition lessons. There’s nothing like sampling fruits, veggies, and herbs freshly grown in the garden, and it’s an unforgettable experience for students! Cooking and taste testing recipes together is wonderful, too. Whether sampling fresh or cooked ingredients from the garden, it’s important to think about best practices for food safety and allergen awareness. On this webinar we’ll hear from Dawn Lovejoy about policies and practices to consider for ensuring that every child is safe to sample from school gardens.
